Abstract

The Church has had a big influence on inhabitants of Northern Spis and Orava for ages and Poland and Czechoslovakia utilized this fact in fighting of the local population for national identity in inter-war time. In after-war period the struggle was concentrated on time when a plebiscite about the controversial territory was being prepared. The fighting continued between believers and some Slovak priests on the one hand and Polish government and church authorities on the other hand after 1920 when Northern Spis and Orava were incorporated into Poland. After two decades the polonification had not been as successful as Polish side expected.
