Abstract

Dependents of the German minority in Czechoslovakia lost their nationality according to the constitutional decree no. 33/1945. The government took more reasonable attitude towards them after the formation of East Germany in October of 1949. Inhabitants could retrieve their nationality according to statutory order no. 252/1949. There lived about 1 500 Germans in Košice region. A little part of them (350) applied to regain the nationality. They came from the following areas: Gelnica, Kežmarok, Vysoké Tatry, Spišská Nová Ves, Levoča, Košice-mesto and Rožňava. 330 citizens were successful; rejection of the other applications was based on various reasons. The restoration of the nationality for every person was the matter of a law accepted on 21 April 1953. Confiscated property was not restituted.
