Abstract

The author analyzes approach of preserved works of the representatives of Hellenistic science centered on the Museum in Ptolemaic Alexandria. He searches for the origins of their theoretical argumentation. He finds it in the tradition of abstract reasoning of ancient Greek thinkers which starts with Thales of Miletusin seventh century B. C. At the same time, he finds traces of experimental approach in works of Pythagoras, Archimedes and Heron of Alexandria. He tries to answer the question why did this approach not penetrate into scientific Works.
