Abstract

The Rusyns are a Slavic peoples who live on the southern and, in part, northern slopes of the Carpathian Mountains. They are by tradition Eastern-rite Christians (either Greeck Catholics or Orthodox), and they speak several East Slavic dialects on the basis of which Rusyns living in the Vojvodina (Yugoslavia), Slovakia, and Poland have each codified a regional literary language using the Cyrillic alphabet. There are, at present, an estimated 1,2 million Rusyns living in East-Central Europe. Since 1989, in each country where they live, Rusyns have striven to be recognized as a distinct nationality. They have been successful in achieving such a status in all countries where they live with the exception of Ukraine. Despite their numbers, Rusyns have never had their own state, although at certain times they have enjoyed an autonomous status, ressembling statehood. At present, in the context of East-Central European democratic states, Rusyns are enjoying basic rights according to the norms stipulated by various international conventions. Despite this, they are frequently the subject of a wide-range of polemics as to whether they are or are not a distinct nationality and whether their language is a distinct language, or simply a dialect of another language. Considering their present-day dynamic development, there is no reason to consider Rusyns as some kind of terminological or nationality phenomenon. This is because they for some time have existed as a distinct nationality with their own language. Therefore, their legal recognition and the acceptance of their distinct characteristics in those states where they now live should, considering contemporary trends throughout Europe, in no way confirms of Rusyns as a distinct nationality.
