Abstract

Paper reviews definitions of human capital,  history of economic research in the field and measures of human capital. We also focus on returns-on-investment into human capital and analyse  channels through which human capital influences economic output.  Positive externalities of human capital are mentioned as well as its  specificities that differentiate human and physical capital. Human capital is an important determinant of  economic growth. Policymakers in the Slovak Republic should get aware of this valuable factor of growth and implement it into national economic  policy. Continuing disinvestment into educational system and research  should be rapidly changed in order to prevent widening the gap between Slovakia and developed economies.
