The history of the guilds in Slovakia: guilds in George Berg, Poprad, Felka, Matzdorf and Michelsdorf

Abstract

In this study, we try the history of the craft and guild life in the five cities of Spis - Poprad (Poprad), George Berg (Spišska Sobota), Felka (Velka), Matzdorf (Matejovce) and Michelsdorf (Stráže pod Tatrami) mainly due to depict preserved archival. There is a large collection of different font guild monuments, mostly written in the German language. The listed cities were already in the Middle Ages a single economic organization. The inhabitants found their livelihood except in agriculture and crafts and partially also in the trade. The reports of artisans in the towns there since the 15th century. The economic development in phenomenon occurs only in the 16th and 17th centuries. The history of the craft peaked in the 18th century. On the basis of our research is to assume that the craftsmanship life was dynamic and cities flourished economically. It created many new guilds and the number of craftsmen increased rapidly. In the cities worked over 20 guilds.
