Abstract

The Burnout syndrome is an important psychological and medical problem with an impact on the quality of life of afflicted subjects and on their performance as well. The interest of many authors has focused on health worker's profession as one of the most risky professions in relation to stress. Factors such as work conditions, interpersonal relationships in the workplace or demographic features are often mentioned in the context of burnout's causes. However, the role of personal variables, especially social intelligence, in burnout of health care workers is not yet known. The main goal of this study is therefore to explore the relationship between them. The data were collected from a sample of 137 health workers in age between  22-59. They filled in questionnaires of burnout, social intelligence and personal variables. Social intelligence was measured by the Tromso Social Intelligence Scale (TSIS; Silvera, Martinussen, Dahl, 2001). The TSIS consists of 3 factors: Social Information Processing, Social Skills and Social Awareness. The results have shown that there is a significant relationship between burnout and some of the personal variables – Social Awareness, Neuroticism and Extraversion. Our findings have confirmed that there is a relationship between components of social intelligence and some personal variables too.
