Abstract

The recent historic research of the women’s movement in Slovakia changes the traditional image of its conservative character and small influence in the society. Taking into account the broader view of the whole Hungary, the research changes significantly the image and periodisation of the Slovak women’s emancipation process. In comparison with the results of Hungarian, Czech and Austrian historiography, the multiple common milestones and personalities are demonstrated. Women from Slovakia constituted the element of fairly mature women’s movement of Hungary, which was divided on the edge of 19th and 20thcenturies into several streams by the way of thinking (Christian-social, social-democratic, radical). Nationalism significantly inspired the women’s movement and women’s emancipation in the Habsburg monarchy. On one hand, women got the better access to the education, and opened the way to the politics, on the other, nationalism limited the women; they were supposed to act in public and politics only in the interest of the nation and as a companion of a man. Although the Slovak politicians incorporated the voting rights for women in the 1913 election programme, the happenings around establishment of the Czecho-Slovak Republic have proven that they did not consider the real political decisional power for women. The final break in the women’s emancipation was brought by the new Czecho-Slovak Republic in 1918, which was based on democratic foundations and equality of genders anchored in the constitution.
